Why are botnets particularly dangerous?

Botnets are particularly dangerous because they can be utilized for coordinated attacks without the knowledge of the individual devices' owners. This capability allows attackers to leverage a large network of compromised computers or devices to execute various types of malicious activities, such as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, sending spam emails, or distributing malware. Each infected device, or "bot," operates under the control of the botmaster, who can direct them to perform malicious actions simultaneously, making it challenging for targets to defend against such attacks.

The element of surprise and lack of owner awareness contribute to the threat that botnets pose. Owners of infected devices often remain oblivious to the fact that their system is being used to facilitate these attacks, which complicates detection and response efforts. This aspect of botnets significantly increases their effectiveness in causing disruption and damage on a large scale.
